Autism and learning disabilities…reversible?

Posted on Wednesday 27 June 2007

Okay…I’m getting offline and going to do research in the print world… but the news keeps getting weirder and weirder today. I picked this up from slashdot.

This is really creepy…and not considering the issues of learning disabilities (which I can do.. it’s my site), what will happen to the arts and technology without people with autism. Autism can be severe and make everyday life exceedingly difficult, but milder forms…well sometimes ‘milder’…have been shown to occur in abnormally high amounts in folks who are artists and programmers. The tertiary symptoms of autism, the ‘mental illness’–ocd, add, bipolar, etc… have been documented as factors in the creative process.

Well, I’m done thinking. Here’s the article from BBC health:
Fragile X Syndrome is linked to mutation in a gene carried on the X chromosome called FMR1.

It can cause symptoms ranging from mild learning disabilities to severe autism.

The researchers, based at MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, targeted an enzyme called PAK which affects the number, size and shape of connection between brain cells.

They found that inhibiting the enzyme stopped mice with Fragile X Syndrome behaving in erratic ways.

Prior to treatment they showed signs of hyperactivity, purposeless and repetitive movements.

Abnormalities corrected

Further analysis showed that not only were structural abnormalities in connections between brain cells righted, proper electrical communication was restored between the cells.

In the brain small protrusions called dendritic spines are responsible for communication between cells.

People with Fragile X Syndrome have more dendritic spines than usual, but each is longer and thinner, and transmits weaker electric signals.

Blocking PAK activity in the lab mice corrected these abnormalities.

Researcher Dr Susumu Tonegawa stressed that the mice were not treated until a few weeks after symptoms of disease first appeared.

“This implies that future treatment may still be effective even after symptoms are already pronounced,” he said.

Professor Eric Klann, of New York University’s Center for Neural Science, agreed that the research was potentially significant.

He said: “This is very exciting because it suggests that PAK inhibitors could be used for therapeutic purposes to reverse already established mental impairments in fragile X children.”

This is a little unusual…well, creepy…
A woman whose defibrillator activated one week to the hour after her father died, and recorded the event, may provide the first documented evidence of “anniversary reaction”, doctors reported.

CIA ‘Family Jewels’ Document in Full

Posted on Wednesday 27 June 2007

There is a big deal being made about the CIA releasing the family jewels. This collection of documents is amazing, but it only confirms what any informed and realistic person knew before…. it’s simply in black and white…well, the parts that aren’t redacted. hehe. It is appaling that we tested LSD on  unsuspecting private citizens and monitored anti-war protesters. But not surprising. And frankly… I want a blackops team that can remove, or at least tries, threatening world leaders…without getting bogged down in a full blown war. But, are you really surprised?
All 702 pages of the CIA’s ‘Family Jewels’. Everything from hiring the Mafia to assassinate Fidel Castro, to wiretapping journalists included. Ironicly, #1 on the list in this document is still classified.

The Avg U.S. d/l speed now is 1.97Mbps vs. 61Mbps enjoyed by the Japanese

This is just disgusting…..
The USA trails other industrialized nations in high-speed Internet access and may never catch up unless quick action is taken by public-policymakers, a report commissioned by the Communications Workers of America warns.” reports USAToday. Okay I understand the international speed difference, but Kansas is rated #1 at 4.1Mbps say it ain’t so.

Well…

Posted on Monday 25 June 2007

This is my first day back to work and it’s nuts. I found out last week there was an ‘issue’ with our approach to the voting issue in Washington County. I haven’t had time to discuss it much, but I’m sure we’ll figure out the proper angle. I have a tremendous amount of meetings and misc process oriented bs to deal with…all while preparing for a review from the feds and a presentation on a national scale to our peers.

Fortunately I have a great staff and work with a bunch of talented people. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to pushing myself the next month and getting some progress made on several fronts. Then I will collapse for several days.
On the home front… Steph is still developing the site with Circuit Riders. We’re a bit behind, but things are starting to look at little more real. That means a lot more questions and development as well. We’ve got a lot wrapped up in this site and it’s a little frightening at times. We’ll be starting a blog for that project soon.

We’re still househunting and it’s not looking good. Interest rates are slowly rising but the housing market in Westmoreland is still hot. It seems as though the entire surrounding area is bottoming out…except Westmoreland. Hopefully the late summer sees some deals. This is when I’m planning on taking my next vacation…to move.

I’m still waiting to post pics of Grace, my sisters baby… I’ve been replacing my network components. My router died, slowly and painfully over the weekend. So, I started replacing it tonight among running other network tests. My system, outside of the damn attempted Vista upgrade, has been suprisingly solid…backups and everything have been fine. So, I’m running intenstive tests and manually checking all the updates. It seems that I always have something that blocks some program from updating on some system.

Well, there’s a bunch of other interesting things soon…new job title in a few days, but I’m too tired to post any more. TTFN

Miracle diet pill with teeny-tiny side effect

Posted on Thursday 21 June 2007

I can’t help but think about the SNL skit when I read about this new weightloss drug.

A new diet pill available over the counter in the US promises “safe, effective weight loss”. It also promises horrible incontinence. Seriously. Right there on the drug company website. They promise that you’ll crap your pants uncontrollably. And they’re still selling millions of these pills to eager customers.

TRIPIL Supports Terri Brown on Voting Issue

Posted on Friday 8 June 2007

Once again TRIPIL is in the newspaper, and once again the Observer-Reporter and County don’t grasp the issue. Terri was not offered the opportunity to vote in the polling place, she was offered, possibly, the chance to vote in the connected garage…not the polling place. Is moving the polling site legal? Is it equal to everyone else?

Second, Terri, under Pennsylvania law, is not eligible to vote by provisional ballot.

I sincerely hope the county gets a handle on this problem, asap. At this point we have a profound lack of leadership and seem to be led by bigots who are knowingly violating state and federal law. It’s unacceptable to think that even one polling place can be inaccessible to any citizen eligible to vote there.

We need leadership and we need it now.
TRIPIL pickets county building on access issue

Tri-County Patriots for Independent Living set up an informational picket at the Courthouse Square office building Thursday, handing out fliers bearing raised fists and asking, “Why are Washington County polling places still inaccessible?”

Terri Brown, 50, of Washington, sent the federal Department of Justice a complaint last week about her experience during the May 15 primary. TRIPIL recorded on videotape conversations outside Brown’s Maple Avenue polling place where she declined to vote a provisional ballot or enter the polling place through a garage-bay door in her wheelchair to circumvent a step.

Andrew Cooper, TRIPIL deputy director, later obtained an alternative ballot application with the word “emergency” written across the top and a paper ballot, but Brown did not fill them out.

“If you choose to go and vote, you should be able to go and vote,” Tom Matthews, who uses a wheelchair, told the board of commissioners Thursday. He was one of several TRIPIL representatives to address the board.

“On behalf of the board, and I think I speak for the entire board, the county does not accept the premise that the woman was disenfranchised,” Commission Co-Chairman Bracken Burns replied. “She was in fact given the opportunity to vote and chose not to take it.”

Brown, who took part in the informational picket, said Thursday that the justice department has not contacted her. Larry Spahr, county elections director, said federal officials have not yet queried him about Brown’s complaint.

After a study this spring, the county maintains that 72 percent of the 185 voting precincts are accessible to the disabled and elderly.

Jonathan Miles, owner of Ace Glass and Mirror on Maple Avenue, where Brown went to vote, informed the county this week he would no longer rent it as a polling place.

“I don’t have the financial wherewithal to make the improvements myself,” the building owner is seen telling Brown on the videotape. “I’m just trying to do a civic thing by having the polls here. What I get paid for rent isn’t worth it.”

The county also will be searching for new polling places to replace two precincts at the North Strabane Fire Department social hall; Prosperity Volunteer Fire Department in Morris Township; and Burgettstown Area High School, due to an extensive construction project.

Wheel chair gets stuck in 18 wheeler front grill guy goes for ride! 50mph

The semi then began driving down Red Arrow Highway, with its new and unusual hood ornament still attached. Speeds of 50 mph were reached, picture included.
