New Mythbusters

Posted on Wednesday 6 August 2008

Tonight is the season premiere of Mythbusters. I don’t watch TV much, but this is one of my favorite shows. So, at least I know what I’m doing tonight, vegging out for a change.

New Weezer Album

Posted on Tuesday 8 July 2008

I just finished my first time listening to the new Weezer album. I think the front man, Rivers Cuomo, is having some issues again. It’s one of the most schizophrenic albums I’ve heard in quite a while. I can’t quite decide if it’s one of their best albums, or an unmitigated piece of crap. I’ll keep listening, because it’s Weezer. Might post some thoughts later.

Batman EmblemI’m posting this after being disappointed that it wasn’t playing at the Science Center IMAX.
from digg:

If there is one thing that you should be doing in preparation for the release of The Dark Knight on July 18th, you should be looking for the nearest IMAX theater in which you can experience the film’s truly epic scale. Here’s the full list:

Signing up for netflix/MyNetFlix

Posted on Monday 25 February 2008

We had a netflix account for awhile and canceled it because we just don’t have time to watch and return movies, even though netflix really is a great and easy to use service.

However, Anthony Park, designed a plugin for netflix that enables you to use their “Watch In Now” feature and instantly access over 7,000 feature movies and tv shows instantly in Media Center. It’s called MyNetFlix We just installed the plugin today and are testing it.

The user interface needs some tweaking to fully use the remote control. So, by signing up for the cheapest netflix plan, we get unlimited access to these movies through vista media center-instantly. If you use media center, I highly recommend it. I also recommend sending the developer a donation through paypal if you use it. If I use it more than a couple times, I’m going to.

Heck, I further hope that someone from Netflix will talk to the guy, give him some more code, some money and let him push the product further. Microsoft should get it on this too, it provides an incredible amount of content to Vista Media Center or to the 360 and would be a killer selling point.

Blue Harvest Tonight and “lovin’ the vista”

Posted on Sunday 23 September 2007

While picking through TV shows for tonight — the only night I really watch TV, I noticed the Family Guy StarWars tribute was called Blue Harvest. I nearly had a geek fit and nerd convulsions (an unpleasant combo).

Uber-nerds and dorks will instantly recognize Blue Harvest as the secret name for Return of the Jedi.

Of course, I wouldn’t have known any of this if it wasn’t for the new interface on Media Center. I’ve even left the visual transitions on, which is something I don’t normally do in any OS. Very nice, very clean and the grandma factor is still evident.

Simpsons premiere and Family Guy StarWars premiere…yep it’s a full blown dorkapalooza tonight.

Vista Media Center Upgrade -redux

Posted on Saturday 22 September 2007

After losing the sound on my xp Media Center for the last time… I decided to try the Vista upgrade again, especially since drivers were released for my tv tuner. Well, this time, unlike the last — it went well. Took about 1.5 hours and a minimum of interaction. New features look nice, UI is much prettier. I’ll blog details later.

Songs for activists and troublemakers

Posted on Monday 10 September 2007

I’m going to do something really lame and post lyrics to songs that have an activist bent to them. I’ll try to include an explanation when possible.

This is a Public Enemy song about how Arizona, for quite a while, refused to acknowledge Martin Luther King day. It’s one of my favorites
By the time I get to Arizona
I’m countin’ down to the day deservin’
Fittin’ for a king
I’m waitin’ for the time when I can
Get to Arizona
‘Cause my money’s spent on
The goddamn rent
Neither party is mine not the
Jackass or the elephant
20.000 nig niggy nigas in the corner
Of the cell block but they come
From California
Population none in the desert and sun
Wit’ a gun cracker
Runnin’ things under his thumb
Starin’ hard at the postcards
Isn’t it odd and unique?
Seein’ people smile while in the heat
120 degrees
‘Cause I wanna be free
What’s a smilin’ face
When the whole state’s racist
Why want a holiday F–k it ’cause I wanna
So what if I celebrate it standin’ on a corner
I ain’t drinkin’ no 40
I B thinkin’ time wit’ a nine
Until we get some land
Call me the trigger man
lookin’ for the governor
Huh he ain’t lovin’ ya
But here to trouble ya
He’s rubbin’ ya wrong
Get the point come along

An he can get to the joint
I urinated on the state
While I was kickin’ this song
Yeah, he appear to be fair
The cracker over there
He try to keep it yesteryear
The good ol’ days
The same ol’ ways
That kept us dyin’
Yes, you me myself and I’ndeed
What he need is a nosebleed
Read between the lines
Then you see the lie
Politically planned
But understand that’s all she wrote
When we see the real side
That hide behind the vote
They can’t understand why he the man
I’m singin’ ’bout a king
They don’t like it
When I decide to mike it
Wait I’m waitin’ for the date
For the man who demands respect
‘Cause he was great c’mon
I’m on the one mission
To get a politician
To honor or he’s a gonner
By the time I get to Arizona

I got 25 days to do it
If a wall in the sky
Just watch me go thru it
‘Cause I gotta do what I gotta do
PE number one
Gets the job done
When it’s done and over
Was because I drove’er
Thru all the static
Not stick but automatic
That’s the way it is
He gotta get his
Talin’ MLK
Gonna find a way
Make the state pay
Lookin’ for the day
Hard as it seems
This ain’t no damn dream
Gotta know what I mean
It’s team against team
Catch the light beam
So I pray
I pray everyday
I do and praise jah the maker
Lookin’ for culture
I got but not here
From jah maker
Pushin’ and shakin’ the structure
Bringin’ down the babylon
Hearin’ the sucker
That make it hard for the brown
The hard Boulova
I need now
More than ever now
Who’s sittin’ on my freedah’
Opressor people beater
Piece of the pick
We picked a piece
Of land that we deservin’ now
Reparation a piece of the nation
And damn he got the nerve
Another niga they say and classify
We want too much
My peep plus the whole nine is mine
Don’t think I even double dutch
Here’s a brother my attitude hit ‘em
Hang ‘em high
Blowin’ up the 90s started tickin’ 86
When the blind get a mind
Better start and earn while we sing it
Now
There will be the day we know those down and who will go

White Riot - click for the wiki enrty

This song is a call to arms from the Clash and one of my favorite Clash songs. It was also my inspiration for naming my dog.

“White Riot”

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

Black people gotta lot a problems
But they don’t mind throwing a brick
White people go to school
Where they teach you how to be thick

An’ everybody’s doing
Just what they’re told to
An’ nobody wants
To go to jail!

All the power’s in the hands
Of people rich enough to buy it
While we walk the street
Too chicken to even try it

Everybody’s doing
Just what they’re told to
Nobody wants
To go to jail!

Are you taking over
or are you taking orders?
Are you going backwards
Or are you going forwards?

Miracle diet pill with teeny-tiny side effect

Posted on Thursday 21 June 2007

I can’t help but think about the SNL skit when I read about this new weightloss drug.

A new diet pill available over the counter in the US promises “safe, effective weight loss”. It also promises horrible incontinence. Seriously. Right there on the drug company website. They promise that you’ll crap your pants uncontrollably. And they’re still selling millions of these pills to eager customers.

Miyamoto wants more happy games

Posted on Monday 12 March 2007
Saw this on msnbc, from the ap. Nonetheless, Miyamoto continues to impress me with his general creativity and unusual understanding of the world…and it shows in his work.  I know I agree with most of the sentiments. Yes, I loved destroying the undead in Dead Rising and really enjoyed Gears of War, but I’m addicted to Viva Pinata…which is nothing like most games.

SAN FRANCISCO - Video game developers should resist the temptation to produce only sequels of established hits and games based on horror and revenge, Nintendo Co.’s top designer said Thursday.

Video game guru Shigeru Miyamoto said his industry’s reputation has suffered in the past decade. Designers have failed to deliver titles that bring joy to the widest possible spectrum of players, focusing too often on hard-core gamers and their lust for gore and realism, he said.

“I always want that first reaction to be emotion, to be positive — to give a sense of satisfaction, glee,” Miyamoto told thousands of developers attending the annual Game Developer Conference here. “Certain obstacles may temporarily raise feelings of suspense, competition, even frustration. But we always want that final result, that final emotion, to be a positive one.”

Miyamoto’s emphasis on plucky, fantastic, upbeat games contrasts with the slew of violent but popular games today — titles such as “Grand Theft Auto,” “Mortal Kombat” and “Resident Evil.” A growing number of politicians, educators and psychiatric experts cite studies linking violent games and aggressive behavior.

Designers take Miyamoto’s lectures seriously. Time Magazine called him “the Stephen Spielberg of video games.”

Miyamoto created titles such as “Mario Brothers,” “Donkey Kong” and “The Legend of Zelda.” Together, those titles have sold about 288 million copies.

Miyamoto — an ambidextrous doodler who plays guitar and banjo — joined Nintendo in 1980 to work on coin-operated arcade games. He’s worked on every game console Nintendo has released over nearly three decades, including the popular Wii, which debuted last year.

He also helped developed “Super Mario Galaxy,” an obstacle course-style game he previewed Thursday. It will come out later this year.

Tom and Jerry

Posted on Monday 12 March 2007

I just realized Cartoon Network airs old Tom and Jerry Cartoons during the day. I added them to my Tivo/DVR. Already had the pleasure of checking out a Chuck Jones classic. It’s amazing the mixture of academic references with violent slapstick still works. Genius.
